Export Form Responses to CSV or Excel

Collected answers become more useful when you can inspect them outside the form viewer. Comet Forms has a Responses view for saved hosted forms and a CSV export for those answers. CSV provides a plain-text table that can be opened by spreadsheet applications and many data tools. It is a suitable bridge between collecting information and cleaning, filtering or analysing it. Exporting is not the same as producing a styled workbook, so check what the destination application does with the data.

The feedback template is a useful example. It collects an optional name and email, a required star rating, two open comments and a recommendation score from zero to ten. Publish a saved copy after reviewing the questions. Complete a test response with a comma, a line break and quotation marks in a comment. Those characters are common in real feedback and should remain within the correct CSV cell rather than splitting a response into extra rows or columns.

Hosted response management requires signing in as the form owner. A local draft has no hosted responses to export. Once answers have been collected through a published link, open Responses, inspect the records and use the CSV export. Verify the column headers against the questions in the form. Renaming or removing a question after collecting responses may change how later exports are interpreted, so retain a record of the questionnaire version when comparing results over time.

Excel can open CSV directly, but CSV itself does not store workbook formatting, multiple sheets, formulas or charts. If you need an XLSX file, use CSV to Excel after downloading the responses. Review import settings rather than accepting automatic type conversion without checking. An identifier such as a phone number or a code with leading zeros may need to remain text. A regional date like 03/04/2026 is ambiguous unless you specify whether the day or month comes first.

Multiple-choice answers and signature values deserve particular attention. A checkbox question can contain several selections, whereas a radio question has one. Decide how you want those values represented in a spreadsheet before aggregating them. A drawn signature may be represented as an image value rather than a short text label and is not suitable for ordinary numeric analysis. The file-selection field currently records a filename only; exporting that filename does not provide an attachment or a downloadable document.

The response charts and filters can help you inspect collected answers before export, but they do not establish that the dataset is complete or statistically representative. Check the number of records you expected and the effect of any active filtering. Keep an untouched copy of the original export before cleaning it. If you remove duplicates or normalize dates, write down the rule you used so another person can understand why the processed data differs from the collected answers.
