How to Schema Validation

  1. 1Upload your CSV file or paste CSV data that you want to validate against a schema
  2. 2Preview your data to verify proper formatting and column structure
  3. 3Review the auto-generated JSON schema or customize it based on your validation requirements
  4. 4Define field types, constraints, and required fields in the JSON schema definition
  5. 5Click 'Validate Data Schema' to run comprehensive validation against your dataset
  6. 6Download the validation results and error report for data quality documentation

Key Features

  • JSON Schema standard validation for industry-compliant data validation
  • Bulk CSV data validation with support for thousands of records
  • Auto-generated schema from CSV headers for quick validation setup
  • Comprehensive data type validation (string, number, email, date, boolean)
  • Advanced constraint checking including length limits and pattern matching
  • Detailed error reporting with row numbers and specific validation failures
  • Export validation results and error reports for documentation and compliance

Why Use Schema Validation?

  • Ensure data quality and consistency across large CSV datasets
  • Identify data validation errors before importing to databases or systems
  • Automate data quality checks instead of manual row-by-row validation
  • Comply with data governance standards using industry-standard JSON Schema
  • Save development time with pre-built validation rules and constraints
  • Reduce data processing errors and downstream system failures
  • Document data requirements clearly with structured schema definitions

Best Practices for Schema Validation Conversion

  • Define clear data types and constraints based on your business requirements
  • Start with auto-generated schemas and refine them for specific validation needs
  • Use pattern matching for complex format validation like phone numbers or IDs
  • Set appropriate string length limits to prevent data truncation issues
  • Make critical fields required while allowing flexibility for optional data
  • Test schemas on sample data before validating large production datasets
  • Document validation rules and maintain schema versions for consistency

Schema Validation FAQ

JSON Schema is a vocabulary that allows you to annotate and validate JSON documents. It provides a clear, human and machine-readable documentation for your data format and validation rules, making it the industry standard for data validation.

Start with the auto-generated schema and customize it based on your needs. Define appropriate data types (string, number, email, date), set required fields, add length constraints, and use pattern matching for complex formats. Keep schemas simple and focused on critical validation rules.

The tool supports string, number, email, date, and boolean data types. Each type includes specific validation rules: strings can have length limits, numbers are checked for numeric format, emails use RFC-compliant validation, and dates are parsed for validity.

Currently, the tool supports basic field-level validation. For complex conditional validation (if field A has value X, then field B is required), you'll need to use more advanced JSON Schema features or validate in multiple steps.

Review the error report to identify patterns. Common fixes include: correcting data formats, filling required fields, fixing length issues, or updating your schema if business rules have changed. Export errors for tracking and assign fixes to data owners.

The tool handles large error sets efficiently. Use the error export feature to download all errors as a CSV file. Focus on fixing systematic errors first (like format issues affecting many rows) before addressing individual data problems.

Yes! Save your customized JSON schemas for reuse. Copy successful schema definitions to validate similar datasets, or create template schemas for different data types in your organization to ensure consistency.

Absolutely! All validation processing happens entirely in your browser. Your CSV files and sensitive data are never uploaded to servers or stored anywhere, ensuring complete privacy and security of your validation process.

Validating CSV rows against a schema

This tool checks CSV data, not arbitrary JSON documents. Load a CSV and it suggests a schema in JSON form; edit the rules, then every row is checked and each problem is listed with its row number, column and value.

Worked example

Schema: {"required": ["email"], "properties": {"age": {"type": "number"}, "email": {"type": "email"}}}

A row with age "twenty" and an empty email produces two errors: "Expected number but got non-numeric value" for age and "Required field is missing or empty" for email.

Limits

  • It supports a practical subset of rules (required fields and simple types such as number and email), not the full JSON Schema specification.
  • To check that a JSON file is well-formed, use JSON Beautifier, which reports syntax errors.
