Can you unlock and protect Excel files online without Microsoft Office?

Yes. Excel worksheet protection, workbook-structure locks and read-only flags are stored as plain settings inside the .xlsx package, so they can be removed without the original password and re-applied with a new one — all inside your browser, with no Office licence and no upload. The one exception is a file-level open password, which uses encryption and cannot be bypassed by any honest tool.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose an Excel tool

Unprotect, protect, convert or repair — start from the groups below.

  2. 2

Load your .xlsx or .xlsm file

The workbook is parsed locally with JavaScript; it never leaves your device.

  3. 3

    Download the new workbook

Protection tools change package protection settings; conversion tools produce a new output format and do not preserve every workbook feature.

Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before using these tools — privacy, file limits, formats and how each job is done.

Yes. Worksheet and workbook-structure protection are stored as settings inside the .xlsx file, so the Excel Password Remover clears them without the original password. Open-password encryption cannot be bypassed.

Never. Workbooks are parsed with JavaScript inside your browser tab — nothing is transmitted or stored, which makes these tools safe for payroll, finance and client spreadsheets.

.xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx and .xltm. Legacy binary .xls files should be re-saved as .xlsx first in Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets.

Yes — the Excel Password Remover on this page runs entirely in the browser. There is nothing to install, no account to create and no watermark on the unlocked workbook.

Removal clears sheet and workbook protection flags so the file becomes editable again. Recovery means retrieving the original password text, which is not possible for encrypted workbooks — and unnecessary when all you need is to edit the sheet.

Use the Excel Password Protector: upload the workbook, set a password, choose whether to lock worksheets, workbook structure or add a read-only recommendation, and download the protected copy.

No. Only the protection settings are changed. Cell values, formulas, formatting, pivot tables, charts and VBA macros pass through untouched.

Open the Excel to CSV tool, drop in the .xlsx file and pick the worksheet you want. It exports clean, correctly quoted CSV directly in your browser.

Yes. The Excel Formula Directory is a searchable reference covering every built-in function with syntax, arguments and practical examples.

It is legal when the workbook belongs to you or you are authorised to edit it — for example a file inherited from a former colleague. Do not use it to bypass protection on files you have no right to modify.

Yes. Anything with a modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox — on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android or ChromeOS.
